In Greek mythology, the Sirens were dangerous bird-women, portrayed as seductresses who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island [wikipedia]. This past week I have been dealing with my own version of the Sirens. The weather has been generally delightful, my knee has felt fine, and my new Vibram Bikila Shoes, though wonderful on the elliptical, have been whispering run, run over and over again. Yes, as I work to make sure that my knee is healthy, the Sirens have been calling me to the road, tempting me to run.
For once, I am trying to be smart about it. I want to run. I need to run. But like Odysseus, I am strapping myself to the mast (the elliptical) and having my men (the DVR) row me through temptation. Though I have to admit I did run one mile (ONLY ONE!) with my buddy Josh (@bostoncardiovet) as he made his way through an uphill mile 11 of the Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon on Sunday.
So far so good. The knee is on the mend, I’m maintaining cardio health and I can see the road just a week away. But as that day approaches, the Sirens’ song gets louder and more beautiful. The temptation to go back just a day, maybe two, early is very strong. Would it really hurt to go back to running just a day early? Probably not, but why take the chance? Right?
Luau, what about some carefully selected Crossfit workouts, continuing to work around the knee? Sweating, good pain, challenge, strength, cardio in most workouts. You should see if you have an affiliate gym near you, could be a great complement to the running too, when you get back on the knee.
Walker – One of the things I am going to try to take with me from this whole resting my knee thing is learning to cross train, which, in my limited opinion, is what Crossfit is really all about.
i feel ya Luau. I had a half this past weekend and I havent run yet. It’s killing me to see sunny days outside but I know I gotta let the feet rest. i can still feel a little residual tension down there and as a coach i gotta listen to my own advice and recover. still the bikila’s call
Hi Luau,
I’m also injured atm, ironically because I decided to try running in shoes after a year of running in VFF/BF. Whether the injury stemmed from the shoes or overtraining, I do not know.
At any rate, I was wondering what the sole of the Bikila is like. My chief concern is that directly beneath the pods of nonmarking rubber is the EVA/non-rubber substance. Is there also rubber beneath the rubber pods?
Thanks,
Andrew
I actually took a look for the first time after your comment and I think that it’s rubber. Regardless, I think that the protection is sufficient. It does not quite have the thickness of the Trek’s which I still love, but I feel like they offer as much protection as the other Vibram products.
