I am a runner. A novice mind you, but a runner. Although I just recently turned 43 (ack!) , I only started running for the joy of it in November of ’08. Before then I would run because I needed to exercise. Now I run because, well, to steal a line, we were born to run.
On my fourth attempt, I was finally able to qualify for the Boston Marathon (achieved on 10/03/10 at the Smuttynose Marathon).
In June of 2009 I became a Vibrams Five Fingers convert. The “shoe” is essentially a glove for your feet, providing no support and some basic protection from rocks and glass. Since then I have run my first three marathons and my several half marathons in the Vibrams. I have since added the Saucony Kinvaras to my arsenal , but for the most part I am a VFF man.
I hope you enjoy my sometimes quirky take on running and how it can affect life (well, mine anyways) and if you are not a runner, I hope that you will find something in this blog that will inspire you to hit the pavement and start running.
Luau, I love the site and the birthday cake. That is incredible craftsmanship.
So well said…keep at it!
Are you wearing the VSS in the Boston marathon?
I am planning on wearing the Vibrams for Boston…think I’m going to go with the Treks instead of the KSO’s.
How do you run in those in the winter? Or are you one of those lucky folks who live in a nice warm climate?
Janice – no, Boston definitely doesn’t qualify as a warmer climate. During the winter I’ve been wearing the Trek version of the VFF’s. They are surprisingly warmer and if you add injinji socks they’re even warmer. The only time I don’t run in them outside is if it’s a really wet snow…then it’s back to my old Brooks.
I have some questions on KSOs, Sprints and Bikilas. What’s the best way to contact you?
You can always email me at runluaurun at gmail dot com.
For runners out there wanting to try the vibram 5 — if you’re a heavy striker they don’t work. My personal experience as I’m a heavy striker when I run lost a month of running — did deep water running. Now back to outdoors in Nike Bowerman sneaks … Just sayin.
Hey Luau–
Just diggin around online and reading May RT and wondered if you have a Running Bucket List, and if so what’s on it? I have one and didn’t know if all runners do too or it’s just a little goal sheet I like to have? Just curious! Happy tapering!!!!!!
Hi Brenna! Actually I do have a bucket list. It’s a combination of places I would like to race and times I would like to beat. The times tend to get adjusted as I scratch one off the list. Currently, marathons I would like to run include London, Miami and Chicago. I would also like to someday run Comrades in South Africa. Running an Ultra is on the list, and that should get scratched off this Fall when I run the Vermont 50. As for times, I would love some day to be able to say I ran a sub-3:00 marathon, though I don’t know if that is in the cards. Hopefully a sub-1:30 Half-Marathon is within reach.
What’s on your list?
First let me start by saying, I understand your lust for Chicago- however I ran my first one on 10/10/10 and it was just okay. I luckily live really close to Chicago so I’ll probably be running it often (just not this year due to the proximity of NY!). Anyway, my list… let’s see. Well I would like to run a relay, most ideally Hood to Coast (it’s like my dream..however slightly unattainable due to corralling enough people to commit) but more realistically Ragnar. I would also like to race the following marathons: Goofy Challenge, Boston (qualified but unable to register… now given the new time constraint we’ll see what happens), New York (fall 2011), Marine Corps and something down South. Then I’d like to see a distance longer than 26.2… so some type of ultra, a triathlon and Bay to Breakers…. As far as time goals I’d be elated to see anything sub 3:30 for the full and around 1:32 for the half. So we’ll see what the year brings. I’ve been reading what good ole’ Pete Pfitzinger has to say and so I wanna give his stuff a try for NY in November….
Sorry the response is so lengthy!

vibrams brought me back to running after years of injury! i owe my life to them…
Just started running again after 6 years of not…after a month- starting to feel it coming back. Bit harder to jump back in at 44. Just have to keep on keepin’ on!
