This one is for the mommies and the daddies. The uncles and the aunts. The grandparents and family friends. And for those who may one day become any one of those things.

What’s your reason to run? Or swim? Or bike? Or walk? Or generally live a healthy lifestyle?
I have two:
I am taking care of this old body of mine because I don’t want to miss a single milestone.
Are you?
Great reasons Luau. I started again last year for largely the same reason, but even more so because my oldest son is autistic and is going to need us to be around as long as he can. We don’t know how independent he will ultimately be, but we don’t want to prematurely burden his brothers with caring for him, as they deserve to live their own lives. Thus, I want to keep the mind and body sharp for many, many years to come.
We’ve got a lot in common Greg!
I’ve been slacking for the last week and a half. Thanks for the reminder of what I could miss out on.
8 miles tomorrow. 🙂
a week or two slacking actually is good for you! you’ve got to let the body recover…you might be surprised tomorrow to find you are stronger than you were 10 days ago!
Beautiful reasons.
Exactly!
Great reasons Luau! And two beautiful reasons I might add. I have three of the same reasons and a younger wife to keep up with too!

Oh dear . . . this one hits very close to home . . . painfully. I do not want to miss one single milestone either . . . something to ponder.
I hear you loud and clear bro, beautifully expressed Matt.
Some great numbers there, and great reasons too. I’ve a child myself and I wouldn’t want to miss a whole slew of Significant Milestones.
I started running a week ago. (I’m trying the couch to 5k program) so far, I love it, even with the pain. I run because it’s something I have always said I could never do.
beautiful reasons to run!! : )
Awesome post. Hit the nail on the head.
My little guys are a bit older than yours, so I had better keep at it!
I run because I want my boys to see what healthy looks like. I run because I can. Because of God, of love, of Twitter and of French Roast coffee. I run because I can enjoy everything I love. Great post.
I don’t have children yet but one of my reasons for running is my wife. I want to be all I can be for her and that is quite a bit of motivation to get myself out and exercise. I think running for other people is one of the best motivations there is.
I completely agree!

Here’s yet another reason more and more parents are wising up and not giving them a dime.
LJ, I cannot pretend to know what it is like to walk in your shoes. Although my daughter’s autism has changed our lives dramatically, she is on a different part of the spectrum from your son. I struggle daily with the concepts of cure vs. tools. I also wonder sometimes what constitutes a cure… I understand that if you feel Autism Speaks is moving away from it’s mission by lending its ears to other views, it is your choice and freedom to choose where to send your money. I believe in that freedom. But I would ask to just to consider that maybe, by extending a hand, by lending an ear, by lending its voice, Autism Speaks is working to bring together the various and fractured voices that are out there…many of them alone in a wilderness of ignorance where there is no awareness of what autism can look like. Jon Robison’s position on a cure does not take away from the position of Autism Speaks. I don’t think he has ever claimed to speak for all people with autism or their families. He is one voice – I don’t think he even claims to represent his one segment of the autism population, which is such a broad spectrum.
I had the opportunity recently to see some of the Autism Speaks dollars in action at lab in Boston. I could see that the resulting data from the research could help in two ways. It could help provide tools that could help non-verbal autistic people with a easier ways to communicate, but also understanding how the brain was processing this information could possibly help future doctors and researchers find a way to break through the wall and allow a non-verbal person to regain speech.
Autism Speaks isn’t leaving its roots. It is simply extending a hand, knowing that like the autism itself, those affected by autism (the individuals and their families) represent a wide spectrum. For them to completely ignore those that don’t agree with their view would be wrong. In my opinion, Autism Speaks is trying to help as many people as they can, in any way they can.
Hey Luau, just wanted to say thanks. This was the post that got me off my butt finally. Starting week 3 of the Couch-to-5k tomorrow, and am down 5 lbs. so far.
Dude! That’s awesome! Thank you for letting me know. Puts a huge smile on my face.
