Today is World Autism Awareness Day. Although awareness is not the goal, it is the means to get us there. I would like to thank each and every one of you who lent words of support, left comments on my wife’s letter to the president and went out and lit it up blue last night.
I am sorry to say that we did not succeed in getting the White House to do the same. We did get President Obama to say —>THIS<—, and the White House did contact my wife for —>THIS<—, but we were really hoping for —>THIS<—.
Thank you again for your time and effort. I’m sorry we could not make it happen.
For those that lit it up blue last night, I hope you will consider leaving your lights like that until the end of the month.
Dearest Luau & Jessica – to quote Matthew Sanford “Wonderful things happen a little at a time”. He is a pioneer in the field of rehab helping those with spinal cord injuries, trauamtic brain injuries and trauma and loss (physical and emotional) to heal their lives through the practice of yoga and mind/body connection. He is working to make inroads in the way people experience rehab and knows that it is done slowly with intention and purpose.
Before Jessica sent her letter there was no proclamation, there was no event; there was no awareness on a national level that this is Autism Awareness Month. It was a huge leap. No the leap didn’t land in the White House being lit up blue but it was nonetheless a huge leap forward and cannot be diminished because the initial goal was not met.
Who knows what is going to come out of this? It may be something that has an even greater impact; who knows? After Jessica meets with the top White House officials, they may be moved to still light up the white house blue before the end of the month.
My love and prayers are with you and we are going to light up blue for the entire month in support and love for you and all who live with autism.
Thank you Mary! Awesome, you are simply awesome!
Mary left such a beautiful comment above, beautiful words and loving sentiment.
I just want to say that I am so very proud of you and Jess for taking a stand. I will be wearing blue today in honor of Autism awareness day.
I, too, will add a quote (not sure who said it but I read it on a bumper sticker).
“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference, has never been alone in a room with a mosquito”
Thank you so much for your support! I love the quote (had never heard it before)!
I am grateful to both of you, Luau. What you and Jess have accomplished as a family is inspiring, what you accomplish as OUR family is even more incredible!
THOUSANDS of military families have found an open door to that path of awareness leading to change because of these efforts.
The open door is only the beginning…
:0)
It is we who are grateful to all of the military families out there. You provide the freedom and liberty that allows Jess and I to do what we do. Thank you!
Matt, you and Jess inspire me every day to keep fighting and accepting this blessing that God has put on me. I call it a blessing because at the same time Autism is not a good thing for our kids, I find my little Sophie so herself in her own beautiful and fun way. Maybe without it she wouldn’t be so loving and intelligent. Who knows… Thank you so much for all that you do every day to inspire us.
Thanks Gaby! Your constant supports means so much! We are all in this together!
Dear Luau and Jessica,
I just wanted to say – but I can’t express really- how beautiful this is what you do. Following your blogs made me realize all the efforts neded to make society know about these tasks.
I know that there were dozens of event due to World Autism Awareness Day but I’m kind of glad to show you some pictures about “blue” evenings here in Hungary.
This one is the Hungarian Parliament: http://www.worldautismawarenessday.org/atf/cf/%7B2DB64348-B833-4322-837C-8DD9E6DF15EE%7D/House_of_Parliament_HU.jpg and this one was a small town’s theatre: http://beol.hu/lapokkepek/cikkek/147000/147561_szinhazkek.jpg
With all my respect,
Renata
Wow! Renata, thank you so much for sharing these pictures with us. It warms my heart to see the world lit blue. Thank you.
