Curious to see your take on FIRST…I’m sure it’s easy to say, it wasn’t the right plan, but as you know, there are so many variables, and with you; heat and nutrition on the course can easily knock 10 minutes off your expected time. Having said all that, you gutted out a great performance. Shame on the race directors for several “foot faults” including a gun time (without mat) for everyone?!? WTF! Some things we take for granted. I had a similar mountain race (Steamboat) that didn’t have water for over three miles in a tougher stretch later in the race. NEVER again will I rely on smaller races to have water–I carried a bottle in my last mountain mary (Ft. Collins.) Great performance and you WILL rebound stronger in your next one.

Sounds like a very picturesque course. The lack of support was somewhat believable, but I was FLOORED when you mentioned there wasn’t a starting mat! WTF!!!

If I were in your shoes (which, admittedly, I am not, being a tortoise to your hare!), I might shift focus to another cool goal. Like a marathon on every continent, or trail 50k-50miles or, ahem, the TransRockies. Sometimes when you completely shift focus, what you were looking for falls into your lap. (Like the friends I know who adopted a child and then, *whoops,* got pregnant.) Of course, I am probably not the right person to offer advice, as I have never quite *gotten* Boston. It looks cool and all, but I’m the person who always picks a 200 registrant trail race over a road race with thousands. I am running my first big race in years (Bolder Boulder) on Monday, after avoiding them like the plague since a Bay to Breakers in the 90s with 70,000+ other people!
